Master of Science in Innovation through Media Arts Technology (MSIMAT) / Master of Science in Media and Arts Technology (MSc in MAT) is a dual degree program jointly developed and delivered by Ateneo de Manila University and Queen Mary University of London. A two-year program on a full-time basis, it allows the student to spend up to four months in London and obtain a degree from both universities.

MSIMAT from Ateneo de Manila is a research-oriented degree that provides foundation courses for design and innovation and a range of electives to pursue specific areas of interest. It has a six-unit credit capstone referred to as a thesis which requires an artifact as an output, a written report and an oral presentation.  The student must likewise prepare a manuscript of his/her thesis work that is ready for submission to a reputable national or international journal or conference.

MSc in MAT from Queen Mary is a unique programme in the UK that includes advanced courses in programming interactive digital media, producing audio and video, making creative installations and research methods. It likewise offers additional advanced option modules that cover topics ranging from advanced technical skills through human interaction to performance and live art.  It includes a placement project with an external partner leading to a thesis.

 

Curriculum

The MSIMAT-MSc in MAT curriculum has a total of 36 units, 30 for core, major, and elective courses and 6 units for thesis. Three (3) Queen Mary courses will be credited to the Ateneo degree and two (2) Ateneo courses will be credited to the Queen Mary degree. Below is a table outlining the curriculum for the dual degree program with the arrows indicating courses to be cross-credited.

 

The dual degree requires the successful completion of two projects – one each for the Ateneo and Queen Mary degree. Though distinct, these two projects can be related and/or be an expansion of the other under the guidance of mentors from each institution.

Retention Policy

Aside from the standard Ateneo and Queen Mary policies for retention of graduate students, MSIMAT-MSc in MAT requires a minimum grade of B+ in each of the first three foundational courses (9 units) required in the first term of the program.
