Dr Ricardo Abad wins seat on the Asian Shakespeare Association
Dr. Ricardo Abad, Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and faculty member of the Theater Arts Program, Department of Fine Arts, was recently elected to fill one of three vacant seats on the Executive Committee of the Asian Shakespeare Association (ASA). Others elected were Yong Li Lan of the National University of Singapore and Hyon-U Lee of Soonchunhyang University, Korea.
The three join an incumbent set of six Executive Committee members headed by Beatrice Lei of the National Taiwan University who serves as ASA President, and both Judy Celine Ick of the University of the Philippines and Poonam Trevedi of the University of Delhi as Vice-Presidents. The remaining Committee members are Minami Ryuta of Shirayuri College, Kang Kim of Honam University, and Yukari Yoshihara of the University of Tsukuba who also acts as Secretary. Alexa Huang of George Washington University has ended his term as Treasurer.
All nine members of the Executive re-elected the President and the two Vice-Presidents for a second term. The elected President, in accordance with the ASA Constitution, reappointed Yukari Yoshihara as Secretary and named Abad the new Treasurer.
The new Executive Committee, with Abad and Ick at the helm, are making preparations for the 2018 Conference of the Asian Shakespeare Association. The conference will be held at the Areté, Ateneo de Manila University, on April 2018, an event that has been approved by Dr. Marlu Vilches, Vice-President of the Loyola Schools. Some 150-200 delegates are expected to attend the conference with the theme tentatively titled “Shakespearean Trafficks/ Shakespearean Tropics” and will feature academic papers and Shakespearean performances.
