Department of Sociology and Anthropology hosts a conference on the global South

The Ateneo Department of Sociology and Anthropology launched on Feb. 4, 2016 an international conference called “Third World Solidarity After the Cold War” featuring the research papers about the Global South of local and international participants.

Professor Fernando Aldaba, the dean of the School of Social Sciences (SOSS), welcomed the delegates and expressed his appreciation to the different disciplines under SOSS for collaborating and putting in interdisciplinary measures to work.

The main speaker, Dr. Dilip Menon of the University of the Witwatersrand discussed the possibility of rethinking the idea of the global south.

Doctor Menon discussed arguments that he would like the participants to ponder, some of these being what people have forgotten in terms of thinking about Global South, the consideration  that colonialism creates a sense of the world that can be traveled through and what theory from the Global South means.

He also suggested that scholars all over the world should come together and talk about the new world and added that there are various movements out there that have transcended the time and space of the modern, the national, the colonial and have engaged with the idea of Western human emancipation.
